I remember seeing these units running in night-time freight service going through Monrovia around 1947. I thought they were a new model of electric locomotive. Many years later, I learned that they were powered by two Caterpillar diesel engines and had double-reduction gears. They must have been working at the outer limits of their capability, and were soon replaced by Baldwin and EMD switchers.
Photos of PE 1653 working to the east around Ogden Route shops on Espee in the late ‘50’s can be found posted on the utahrails site updates this year. Of the three presented shots, one can be found just beyond Alco PA #6021.
