This interesting piece of equipment looks like a former PE “Medium Five” car of the 530-class that was converted to a combine. The two trolley poles suggest that this particular car was once used in the subway.

I am aware that the PERy always numbered their equipment in the 1300’s when converted to combines. I like this #1305 combine in the b&w photo, above. I wish it were done as a brass scale model years ago (by E. Suydam & Co.).

There was a pair of combines, 1304 and 1305, that were converted from 544 and 546 in 1934. Between the Depression and the arrival of the Hollywood cars in the 1920’s, PE had a plethora of 500-class cars to work from. Then they became nominal box motors, but were actually used in non-revenue service, finally being scrapped in 1951 and 1948. A one-third scale replica of 1304 ran in a park south of El Monte in the 1970’s, and is reportedly in storage somewhere in the San Gabriel Valley to this day.
