This photo documents that at least on one occasion, a sled led a PE train. Most photos showing PE sleds in service show the sled sandwiched between two powered cars.

A typical consist for a Santa Anita Race Track special would be two combines of the 1370 and/or 1372 class with a Long Beach trailer (like 1247) in the middle. One might consider this as the ancestor of today’s Metrolink trains with the cab cars/control trailers usually on the inbound head end.
