Buses Everywhere
Los Angeles Transit Lines (former Los Angeles Railway) streetcars await dispatch at the Avenue 28 & Idell Street (Division 3) car barn while the future of Los Angeles transit lurks in the background in the form of new General Motors buses. Pictured here are car no. 1528 from the W Line with a destination board reading “N. Figueroa”; and car no. 1440 from the 5 Line with an Inglewood / Hawthorne destination board.

This Car House was at Ave. 28 & Idell St. Called Division 3 Probably taken in 1947
There seems to be a real lack of historic images covering the lifespan of the car house complex. Luckily, I just aquired a photo from the 1920 era (or earlier) which appears to be looking down the inbound (Cypress) main with the opposite end of the tri-barns in view. There’s a whole complex spilling to the right with the Elysian Park hills forming a high wall across the far distance. It’s all nearly empty upsloping lands with the occasional church or such over there. And an interior image with a setup of belt driven (electrical?) machinery and a guy working it came from the same photo pile and might just be related.
Of course I was wrong! The shot could not match correctly. And the track guage looked too wide. Turns out it was the Sherman Shops and car house complex just before West Hollywood was built up. This LAP/PERy view therefore looks North by Northwest from the south approach. (Alfred Hitchcock was not present.)
