This entry lacks a photo. I’m curious about the mention of trains running from Watts to Santa Anita. I was always under the impression that Race Track specials always originated at 6th & Main. I do remember seeing “Hollywood” cars going through Monrovia with “WATTS LINE” on the headsigns, and asking my folks where Watts was. I suspect that this was a test train to see whether the 600-700 class cars could maintain the schedules on the Monrovia-Glendora Line.
Santa Anita Race Track would be off the Monrovia line and the city of Watts would be off the Long Beach/San Pedro line. Now I understand that they had 600 and 700 class cars running from Serra Vista (northern district) to Watts (southern district) until sometime around 1950 when all Watts cars originated from the 6th street station. Could this be related to this service?
Could this have been a railfan excursion? Railfans have been known to hang incorrect signs as a joke. And Race Track trains usually had “Special” on the roll sign.
