Meeting of the Minds
Two elements of a great empire – Pacific Electric and Southern Pacific – meet in this dramatic 1930s image. A PE interurban waits while a Southern Pacific steam locomotive no. 1736 (with Vanderbilt tender) moves down the SP right-of-way at Garey Avenue in Pomona.

This photo was taken at Garey Avenue and the SP crossing in Pomona, where PE crossed the SP. Locomotive 1736 was not a switcher (although it may have been used as a switcher from time to time); it was used in local and branchline service through most of it’s life. Most SP switchers had clear vision tenders (having a narrow oil compartment). 1736 may have been used on the Chino branch on the day this photo was taken.
Baldwin 1901 M-6 2-6-0 Mogul (“Hog” in Espee parlance). Front end views will later often appear quite altered with the re-buildings of the WWII events. A good pictorial comparative reference, but not including SP #1736, is the 1998 Monte Vista Photo Album Series Volume 2 by Duane Karam Junior. Though not alone, Stan Kistler weighs heavily in the image record of these engines around Los Angeles.
