1217 on the Railroad Boosters Trip #15

Pacific Electric interurban no. 1217 pauses at Crescent Junction (Fairfax and Santa Monica Blvd.) as part of the Railroad Boosters’ Trip #15 entitled “San Fernando Valley.” The date is February 19, 1939.

    This must be Pacific Electric interurban no. 1217 before it was refurbished and given the “Butterfly” treatment around 1940. Another photo of 1217 can be found in the Donald Duke collection – “1217 at San Bernardino Station”.

    Nearly all the charms of traction are found in this one photo: vintage equipment, street running and a delicate web of overhead wire. No other form of railroading so closely interacted with so many people’s daily lives.

    Outstanding photography.
