Were the GE 44 ton switchers painted black with white lettering or does anyone know?

Bob Smaus, a frequent contributor to both MODEL RAILROADER and RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN did an article quite a few decades past about PE 44-tonners and speculated that they may have been painted in a red color, IIRC with white lettering, similar to what was used on “juice jacks”. He had no proof of this but the model was stunning.

A point he made about photos that he had seen was that the B&W shade of gray just didn’t look like it was black and if you look at the image above it does appear to be a color lighter than black. We may never know but his model sure looked nice!!!

Oops… sorry… it was the August 1990 issue of RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN. Probably can get a copy on the cheap from Railpub. I purchase nearly all of my magazines from them at great prices!!!
