Pacific Electric interurban no. 1044 heads south as the Newport Beach Limited, passing mere feet from the crashing surf of Orange County.

This is an awesome beachfront shot of the last “Ten” from the 1001-1044 group. This is one of my favorite photos.

In fact, this is one of the best photos I’ve seen of a “Ten”. My compliments to the photographer.

This photo was used as the cover illustration for “Ride the Big Red Cars” by Spencer Crump, and is also in “PE” by Donald Duke. The photographer was John Lawson. This was probably a railfan excursion around 1947. Not a surfer dude in sight!

We will be posting a very nice color shot by Robert T McVay made on the same fan trip dated October 30th, 1949.

As they say, a picture says a thousand words. These pictures show the surf line a few feet away from the right-of-way. circa 1940..but that is not where it is today! same for the west facing beaches, hermosa beach-2012-the water appears to have receded a couple hundred feet from the Redondo beach line at Hermosa, and Manhattan Beaches, and points north.
