Why in this and other photos Blimps had those gates at door openings?

The gates were leftover from their original home in Oakland on the SP/IER suburban service to Alameda and Berkeley. PE replaced them with wooden doors during the 1946-47 upgrade project. This upgrade also included interior makeovers with new seats and modern lighting. I have a vague recollection of riding an unmodified “blimp” on the Monrovia Line, when it still had the gates and the rattan-covered seats.

Could this photo be taken near the West Basin crossing from San Pedro to Wilmington to Los Angeles for the Catalina Special?
