The Donald Duke collection contains remarkable black & white photographs of my favorite Pacific Electric equipment, the famed “Tens” (1001-1044 class). They were all scrapped, most of them during the 1950’s. They’re just a memory now. #1001 has survived and is currently at the Orange Empire Railway Museum. Actually, there is one other “Ten” that has also survived, #1000. In 1913, #1000 was pulled from the group shortly after delivery to the Pacific Electric Ry and taken to the Torrence shops and rebuilt into a v.i.p. railcar – the “Commodore” Business Parlor car. It resides at OERM.

In this view 1042 is sitting on layover at the end of the line on Balboa Blvd., just West of Main St. A short walk down Main St. to the left was the Balboa Pavillion and Fun Zone and to the right was the beach and pier. I wonder if on busy days the conductor would stop traffic so that his passengers could make it to the curb in one piece.
