1031 has just left the Newport Beach PE Station on its Limited run to Los Angeles.

1031 also left a hole in my heart (along with the other “Tens”) after the 1050’s, because they were all scrapped. And I never got to see these awesome PE cars in person, or ride in them.

    They’re gone forever.

I beleave that this car has departed Balboa a few minutes earlier and is appoaching Newport Beach station. Car 1031 is in the median of Balboa Blvd. at 19th St. At that point the tracks and street curve and there was a Standard Oil facility and spur on the bay side of tracks. This portion of the Newport – Balboa line was abandoned June 19, 1940. During my highschool years I delivered telegrams for Western Union. This area was part of my route. At that time a short section of what had been the Standard Oil spur was still embeded in the Northbound lanes of Balboa Blvd.
