A view of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (ex-Pacific Electric) viaduct along Huntington Drive near El Sereno. This image features an MTA car on the viaduct, a coach at street level, and classic Los Angeles haze hugging the hillside. The viaduct still stands. The image was captured September 15, 1951.

This would have been just before the abandonment of rail passenger service to Pasadena and Monrovia-Glendora. Both the streetcar and the bus were both still part of Pacific Electric at this time. Metropolitan Coach Lines didn’t take over until about two years later.

Again Bob you give great details. I live nearby and see this location every day. The City is preparing to remove the bridge and create an improvement for the community. This is a nice historic photo of Rose Hills in black and white.

Is it too late to get the bridge declared a landmark? It has a lot of historical significance, even if it hasn’t served its original purpose since 1951 or so.

Soto St bridge is planned to be removed, not to improve the community of El Sereno, but to make it easier for commuters to get to downtown. Most of the residents of El Sereno and Lincoln Heights are opposed to the removal of the historic bridge just to create a virtual ‘freeway’ through the historic communities of El Sereno and Lincoln Heights. The El Sereno Historical Society is looking into getting the bridge declared a historic landmark. I’m sure they would appreciate help from anyone who cares about saving the bridge. By the way, Rose Hills is nowhere near this area. Rose Hills is in Whittier. This are is Lincoln Heights/El Sereno, just to help out those that are confused.

This area including parts of Monterey Pass road in the vicinity of Rose Hills Park have been traditionally called Rose Hills by the long time residents. I lived in the area and had the distinct pleasure of knowing many of the old timers. Good friendly people. I also lived in Whittier for a time near the “other” Rose Hills.

That vacant land in the foreground is now a multi-family residential dwelling at 2580 North Soto.
