Pacific Electric no. 1121 heads out of Lamanda Park (East Pasadena) toward Sierra Madre from Lamanda Park Junction in March of 1935. Note the penny scale and the PE employee’s phone booth. This is near the intersection of Colorado and north Sierra Madre Boulevard, looking southeast.

Reminds me of the time I was riding an RTD Line 68 bus through San Marino around 1967. As we approached the stop in front of City Hall, the driver called out, “San Marino Junction! Change cars for Lamanda Park Junction, Sierra Madre and Wilson Trail!” I commented “Sounds like you remember the PE” and he recalled running 500-class cars back in the 1930s. Nostalgia time was definitely in session!
Regarding the phone booth: Two of them are preserved at Orange Empire, one with a complete phone equipment display on the main platform, where PE cars stop on Saturdays and Sundays.

I could just make out the signage on the business in the background; it looks like Barber Shop/U R Next (and this was before “texting” was invented). Last time I looked, this corner was occupied by a “chain” drugstore. Previously there was a bank and a gym. Talk about changing land use patterns! But the southwest corner is still Fedde Furniture, which was probably there when Birney cars ran eastward on their way to Daisy Ave.

Is this photo really from 1935? The car has no Eclipse fender. But it doesn’t appear to have the electric marker lights, so maybe it just ran shuttle service from San Marino to Sierra Madre, and deadheaded to Macy St., or was the second or third car in a train, and thus would not need the fender to comply with LA City regulations.
