Why does the PE1451 not have a headlight or rear markers fitted in this photo??

If you look closely, there is a rear marker (oil-burning lantern type) above the rear door. None of the 1451-class box motors survived, but Tower Car 00157, from the same construction order (built in 1915 at PE’s Los Angeles Shops) is preserved in running condition at Orange Empire. As a boy, I saw 00157 going by my house in Monrovia, and in recent years I’ve run it several times at OERM.

The location of this photo is looking north east on Rialto Ave. in San Bernardino. just west of Mount Vernon. The cross street in the picture is Mount Vernon. The 1451 is traveling east on Rialto Ave. after just crossing the Santa Fe short way main track. the signal bridge in the picture is to protect the west bound PE trains when crossing the Santa Fe short way Main.

The headlight was most likely on the other end of the car. It was portable.

This photo shows PE 1451 when she had pilots…when did PE replace them with foot boards?

Nice composition of subject matter…a bottle delivery truck (yellow Coca Cola?) by the pharmacy/liqours, and two guys working the telephone lines while a third looks up. Not the kind of stuff that usually wanders in to these trolley shots. Helps place PE as a normal element of daily life in SoCal.
