190 at Hoover and Private Right-of-Way

Los Angeles Transit Lines (ex-LARy) 9 Line streetcar no. 190 turns from Hoover onto private right-of-way from the street. The destination board reads “9 / To 48th Str. & Crenshaw.” Note the interesting billboards on the building side; one advertises a temperance issue in an upcoming campaign (“The Hour is 12! / Liquor Control / Vote NO on 2 – Yes on 12!” – obviously trying to reduce on- and off-sale liquor sale hours; the other promotes upcoming events at Carrell Speedway in Gardena (located at what is today the intersection of Vermont and Artesia), including “Indianapolis driver Rex Mays.”

This photo was taken at the point where the 9 line turned from Hoover onto private right of way (ROW). The private ROW extended from Hoover to Normandie, at which point 48th Street started. The private ROW crossed Vermont and the F line (or U line or K line, depending upon the date)without traffic signal protection. I don’t recall any accidnets as a result of this crossing, however. Maybe there was a lot less traffic back then.

The auto race poster advertises an event on Sunday, Jan 9. Checking the Almanac, that would be in 1949 (the car is in an LATL paint job, so it’s after 1945). To us streetcar fans, riding this car would be a treat, but for citizens who had to ride one of these pre-World War I relics every day, it would be one more reason to buy a car or welcome buses with upholstered seats. According to Interurbans Special 43, Car 190 was built in 1903 and scrapped in 1951.
