City Terrace Drive @ Rogers Street, looking towards Hazard Ave, in the City Terrace area of East Los Angeles.
This is a sight I haven’t seen in 44 years and I kinda regret seeing it now. The image I carried in my mind was of a beautiful movie palace but here is the proof that the image was false. Wow. The large Spanish house on the hill in the right hand corner was called “The Castle” when I was a kid. In 1990, I was in escrow to buy it, but there were legal problems with the sale and I didn’t get it.
I remember all that I see in this picture.
We always rode line 2 before my mother got her car in 1963!
I also remember the Terrace Theater as beautiful but seeing it here leaves a lot to be desired. It is part of St Lucys Church since 1970 or so.
I still live in City Terrace (50+ years) and there has been quite a few improvement. New home owners also doing pretty heavy remodeling on the older homes. Tree lined street, new units City Terrace @ Herbert Street bridge, flower islands in the middle of City Terrace Drive.

I lived in City Terrace from 1946 until 1956. I saw many movie shows at the TERRACE theater, I remember the B line streetcars and the first week of service of the #2 Trolley Coach line in 1948′ I lived a block from the end of B line, and when the #2 line was extended to Eastern Ave , the new route crossed my street as part of a loop.
Ralph, how did the 2 line loop–clockwise Miller-Rogers-Eastern? When I rode the old SCRTD Line 32 in the seventies, I wondered why it detoured onto Rogers instead of staying on City Terrace. I think that was to honor the Rogers part of the old loop.
Wow! My memory isn’t distorted afterall! This is one of the images that pops up, when I dig into my memory file. City Terrace looks very different, from this angle, today. This is wonderful…
Eldest brother, four older sisters would walk down City Terrace Drive, together, to visit the Terrace Theater. I remember my eldest sister (who would be sixty-four, passed on) holding my hand. That trolley and Mom (passed on) also come to mind. Amazing!
I read about the old streetcar, “B” line, and how it ran down the middle of City Terrace Drive. The trolleys came after, and I do recall these. Amazing!
